U.S. Senate Approves National Defense Authorization Act
The massive legislation, which the House had already approved earlier this month, now awaits President Donald Trump's signature to become law.
Spanning 3,086 pages, the National Defense Authorization Act contains $800 million earmarked for Ukraine through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative—distributed as $400 million annually over the next two fiscal years. The measure also eliminates Caesar sanctions previously imposed on Syria during Bashar al-Assad's regime.
Israel will receive $600 million under the bill's provisions, with funding directed toward collaborative missile defense programs including the Iron Dome system.
The legislation addresses strategic competition with China while bolstering Indo-Pacific operations. Taiwan will benefit from $1 billion allocated through the Taiwan Security Cooperation Initiative.
Additional provisions empower the US Department of Defense to invoice NATO member states for costs associated with American military deployments across Eastern Europe. The bill mandates that the US European Command (EUCOM) commander deliver yearly evaluations comparing US-NATO military capabilities against Russia's forces.
Pentagon officials must also analyze national security implications before reducing American troop presence in Europe below 76,000 personnel.
