Senior official states Brazil to challenge Trump with push for BRICS collaboration
The US had threatened to impose tariffs over Brazil’s cooperation with the BRICS bloc and its prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Speaking to the Financial Times, Celso Amorim said that US pressure is actually “reinforcing our relations with BRICS,” as Brazil seeks diversified partnerships to avoid reliance on any single country.
Amorim added that Brazil is also working to expand diplomatic and economic ties with partners in Europe, South America, and Asia to broaden its global options.
He criticized Trump’s actions as unwarranted interference in Brazil’s internal affairs, describing it as more intrusive than anything experienced “even in colonial times.” Amorim denied that BRICS represents an ideological alliance.
Earlier this month, Trump threatened tariffs up to 50% on Brazilian imports, linking the threat to Brazil’s handling of Bolsonaro’s trial, where the former president faces coup-related accusations following the 2022 election. Trump also warned of a 10% tariff on countries that align with BRICS, which he labeled “anti-American.”
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva pushed back against Trump, telling him he is not “the emperor of the world” and affirming that Brazil would not bow to external pressure.
Trump has been a vocal critic of BRICS, accusing the bloc—composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—of attempting to undermine the US dollar’s dominance. Russian officials have responded by saying that although BRICS is not seeking a common currency, about 65% of trade between members is conducted in national currencies. Moscow also stressed that BRICS was never intended to rival the US, attributing debates about reducing dollar dependence to Washington’s “arbitrary” policies.
