UK Warns China Over War with Taiwan

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom may resort to military action against China if tensions over Taiwan escalate, according to British Defense Secretary John Healey.

Despite this, Healey emphasized that the UK still prioritizes diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue.

Speaking with a news agency during a trip to Australia, Healey affirmed that Britain would be prepared to “secure peace through strength” if the situation demands it, making this one of the most direct statements yet from a senior UK official regarding a potential confrontation with China.

Healey’s comments came as the HMS Prince of Wales, a British aircraft carrier equipped with F-35 fighter jets, docked in the Australian city of Darwin.

This marks the first time in nearly three decades that a British strike group has visited the region.

The carrier is currently on a nine-month deployment to the Pacific, which includes participation in Australia's Talisman Sabre military exercise, as well as scheduled visits to ports in Japan and South Korea.

“If we have to fight, as we have done in the past, Australia and the UK are nations that will fight together. We exercise together and by exercising together and being more ready to fight, we deter better together,” Healey stated in response to questions about what actions London would take in the event of a conflict over Taiwan.

However, he clarified that he was speaking in “general terms” and reassured that the UK’s stance on Taiwan had not changed.
