Lavrov Warns U.S.-Led Exercises Jeopardize Northeast Asia Stability
At a press briefing in Wonsan on Saturday, Lavrov criticized the growing frequency and scope of joint military exercises involving the U.S., South Korea, and Japan, noting that some of these operations now feature “a nuclear component.”
“This does not contribute to peace and stability, not only on the Korean Peninsula but throughout Northeast Asia,” Lavrov stated, voicing doubt over Seoul’s sincerity in seeking reconciliation with Pyongyang.
The foreign minister denounced what he called “dangerous attempts by actors outside the Indo-Pacific to form exclusive alliances and expand NATO infrastructure in the region.” He emphasized that military partnerships should not be established at the detriment of others. Lavrov affirmed that both Russia and North Korea advocate for “equal and indivisible security” across Eurasia.
The warning comes as U.S., South Korean, and Japanese forces carried out coordinated military drills this week, which included the deployment of American B-52H strategic bombers capable of delivering nuclear payloads. In a joint declaration, the allied nations accused North Korea of engaging in “unlawful activities” that “destabilize the Korean Peninsula.”
In June 2024, Russia and North Korea formalized a defense agreement. Following the pact, Pyongyang sent troops later that year to assist in pushing back Ukrainian forces from Russia’s Kursk Region—a move Lavrov described as reflecting the “invincible brotherhood” between Moscow and Pyongyang.
